How It Works
The rind of this tropical fruit contains the active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid or HCA, which helps boost fat burning and suppresses appetite. HCA actually blocks your fat making enzyme, called citrate lyase and increases your satiation inducing hormone called serotonin. However, when garcinia was clinically tried, it failed to produce impressive results. People who took this supplement lost 2 more pounds than people who didn’t. However, it was hard to differentiate if this weight loss was actually caused by the product or by the exercise and lower calorie diet.
High Cholesterol and Diabetes
Garcinia cambogia effectively improves your body’s usage of glucose. In a study, mice were injected with garcinia and they were found to have lower insulin levels than mice that weren’t injected. Thus, other than weight loss, garcinia is also effective for people suffering from diabetes. However, keep in mind that taking garcinia in combination with your regular medication could dangerously lower your sugar levels. There is also research on garcinia’s effect on cholesterol levels. The product is known to lower triglycerides and LDL, while raising HDL. Again, make sure you don’t use this supplement in combination with other medications.
Side Effects of Garcinia Cambogia
Some users of garcinia cambogia for weight loss experienced dizziness, dry mouth, headache, upset stomach and even diarrhea. In fact, in 2009 the FDA warned against usage of the product as it also caused serious problems in the liver. However, the supplement also included other ingredients, so it’s not entirely clear if garcinia cambogia was the sole culprit.
