Many people are working really hard to make a lot of money. They believe that wealth will bring them satisfaction, fulfillment, contentment, peace, and joy. If you have enough money, you won’t have to feel stressed, right? You will have the means to give yourself and your family everything that you need, so what could be more important than building up your wealth?
If only you had more money, you would be happy—at least, that’s what you tell yourself. But, is it true? According to Southern Living, it turns out that exercise makes you happier than money or wealth could. Keep reading to learn more.
Experts at Yale and Oxford conducted a research study in order to gain greater insight into mental health and the effect that exercise can have on mental well-being. Basically, the researchers looked at data regarding the mental health and physical behavior of over one million Americans.
Participants in this study were asked about how many times they felt mentally unwell over the course of the last month as a result of emotional problems, depression, or stress. Beyond that, the researchers asked the participants about their activity level and their income level.
After really looking at the data collected from the participants in this interesting study, experts found that people who exercise on a regular basis felt down on roughly 35 days each year, while those who are not active experienced an additional 18 days, on average, during which they didn’t feel good. So, it turns out that it’s true that exercise makes you happier!
What about money? Can it make you happy? Well, those participants who said they’re active showed that they felt as good as individuals who weren’t active and made a whopping $25,000 more annually. In other words, even though they were making less money per year, they felt as good as the higher earners because they maintained an active lifestyle.
Sure, physical activity can help you remain happier on a day-to-day basis, but if you exercise an excessive amount, you might end up doing more harm than good. Researchers found that activity will boost your mental state if you stick with training anywhere from three to five times weekly, for about 45 minutes at a time. If you exercise for more than three hours per day, your mood could take a hit, and it might even fall below that of people who aren’t active.
